Where "G'day" Comes From
A contraction of "good day," dating back to at least the 19th century in Australian usage, though the greeting itself has older roots in British and Scottish dialects.
Over time it became so strongly associated with Australia that it's now one of the most recognisable pieces of Australian English internationally, often the very first phrase people learn.
How Aussies Actually Use It
The default, all-purpose hello — "g'day mate, how ya goin'?" works for strangers, friends, and everyone in between, at any time of day despite the "day" in the name.
It's genuinely used in everyday speech rather than just a stereotype — casual, friendly, and equally at home in the city or the bush.
