Where "Arvo" Comes From
"Arvo" follows Australia's favourite word-shortening formula: chop a word down and stick an "-o" on the end, the same pattern behind "servo" (service station) and "smoko" (smoke break). Here, "afternoon" gets trimmed down to its first syllable and reshaped into "arvo."
The habit of "-o" abbreviation took off in Australian English through the 20th century, and "arvo" became one of its most enduring and universally understood results, used the same way from Perth to Sydney.

How Aussies Actually Use It
"Arvo" is used constantly and without a second thought — in plans ("see you this arvo"), greetings ("g'day, how's your arvo going?"), and everyday small talk about the time of day.
It pairs naturally with other shortenings, as in "Saturday arvo" (sometimes even trimmed further to "sarvo"), and works equally well in casual writing and speech.
