Oxford English Dictionary editors have specifically noted how heavily Australians lean on this kind of shortening compared to other varieties of English.
Green's Dictionary of Slang records "brekkie" from 1922, though its earliest print use was actually Irish (James Joyce's Ulysses) — the pattern itself is well studied in Australian English regardless, less about this one word and more about a broader national habit of making everyday vocabulary sound friendlier and less formal.
