Where "Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi" Comes From
Believed to have grown out of Welsh rugby crowd chants ("Oggy Oggy Oggy, Oi Oi Oi") that were adapted by Australian sports fans in the 1980s, swapping "Oggy" for "Aussie" to fit the nation's own teams and events.
It caught on fast at cricket and rugby matches before spreading to the Olympics and beyond, becoming one of the most recognisable pieces of Australian sporting culture.
How Aussies Actually Use It
Chanted in call-and-response at sporting events — one voice yells "Aussie! Aussie! Aussie!" and the crowd roars back "Oi! Oi! Oi!" — a ritual as much about crowd bonding as patriotism.
It's also used a bit tongue-in-cheek outside of sport, sometimes deployed ironically to poke fun at over-the-top nationalism.
