Where "The G" Comes From
The Melbourne Cricket Ground was established in 1853, when the Melbourne Cricket Club — then only fifteen years old — was compelled by the government to relocate from its original site because the route of Australia's first steam train line was set to pass straight through the ground.
From that forced relocation, the MCG grew into one of the largest and most famous sporting stadiums in the world, hosting Test cricket, the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, the 1992 Cricket World Cup final, and countless AFL Grand Finals — a history substantial enough that Melburnians and sports fans nationwide simply call it "the G" without needing to say more.

It's used constantly in conversation and sports commentary as shorthand for the ground itself.
