Fill the Gap

Pick the slang word that fits the sentence, then hear an Aussie say it.

Ten sentences, one missing word

About Fill the Gap

Fill the Gap is a free listening and reading game for Aussie slang. Each question gives you a real example sentence from the Fair Dinkum Aussie Slang dictionary with one word missing. Pick the slang word that fits. Then, whether you got it right or wrong, you hear an Aussie voice say the word and the whole sentence, so you pick up the accent along with the meaning.

How the scoring works

Each right answer is worth 100 points. Right answers in a row add a streak bonus: 50 extra points for the third in a row, 100 for the fourth and so on, up to 250. Some sentences have two slang words, so they have two gaps: fill both from the six words shown, in order. Getting both right is worth 150 points, one right is worth 50 and breaks your streak. A wrong answer breaks the streak and shows you the real meaning, so every miss teaches you something. There are ten questions in a round, picked at random from the sentences that have audio.

Tips

Say the sentence in your head with each word in the gap. Most wrong options are the wrong kind of word, so ask whether you need a person, a place, a thing, a feeling or an exclamation. Want a timed challenge instead? Try Slang Sprint, or catch the right word as it falls in Boomerang Shootout.
