Where "Have a squiz" Comes From
First recorded in Australian print in 1913 in the era of C.J. Dennis's The Sentimental Bloke, "squiz" is an ingenious Australian portmanteau blending "squint" with the older English word "quiz" (which originally meant to peer curiously or examine). It sits proudly alongside "have a geek" and "Captain Cook" in Australia's rich toolkit of looking words!
"Have a squiz at this photo and tell me if it's him."
How Aussies Actually Use It
A squiz is a quick, casual look. You can have a squiz or take a squiz at something, and it never means studying it for long.
It is handy when you want someone to check something: "can you have a squiz at my CV?" It sounds relaxed and friendly.

Say It Like an Aussie
Say it: HAV a SKWIZ.
In conversation:
- Have a squiz at this and tell me what you think.
- Come and have a squiz at the new car.
- Give us a squiz at your phone.
Good to know: Itβs friendly, casual and quick. A βsquizβ can also stand alone, as in βGive us a squizβ.
