Where "Eshay" Comes From
"Eshay" is one of the youngest words in this dictionary, first appearing in the phrase "eshay lad" around 2002, according to the Australian National Dictionary Centre. It's generally traced to pig Latin wordplay — most likely built from "sesh" (a session, often drug-related), though a rival theory ties it to pig Latin for "yes" used as a general exclamation.
The word and the subculture around it stayed mostly confined to its origin communities for close to two decades before Netflix's 2022 reboot of "Heartbreak High" introduced the term to a much wider audience through its eshay character Ca$h — a reminder that the original 1994 version of that same show predates the word by close to a decade.
