"Bogan" is of uncertain origin — some have linked it to the Bogan River and district in western New South Wales, though most language researchers think that's unlikely and the word arose independently.
It became widely known in the late 1980s thanks to the fictional schoolgirl "Kylie Mole" on the television series The Comedy Company, whose exaggerated persona helped cement "bogan" as a household word for an unsophisticated, unfashionable person.
