Where "Dag" Comes From
Literally referred to the clumps of dried dung and wool that get matted around a sheep's rear end — about as unglamorous an origin as slang gets.
Over the 20th century it shifted from a literal farming term into an affectionate description of someone endearingly uncool or socially awkward, the unflattering image softened into a term of fondness.
How Aussies Actually Use It
Almost always said with warmth rather than genuine insult — "you're such a dag, but we love ya" captures the gentle teasing at its core.
