Where "Woolies" Comes From
"Woolies" is a straightforward, affectionate shortening of Woolworths, Australia's largest supermarket chain — founded on 22 September 1924 by five Sydney entrepreneurs, with the first store opening that December in the Imperial Arcade on Pitt Street under the wonderfully blunt original name "Woolworths Stupendous Bargain Basement."
