Where "Togs" Comes From
"Togs" is actually a very old British slang term — it comes from "toggery," 18th-century slang for clothes in general, long before it had anything to do with swimming.
Over time, different parts of Australia narrowed the word to specifically mean swimwear, with Queensland adopting it most strongly as the dominant local term, while Victoria and South Australia mostly say "bathers" instead.
How Aussies Actually Use It
If you're in Queensland, "togs" is simply the word for swimwear — used by everyone, for both men's and women's swimwear alike.
Travel further south and you'll hear "bathers" or "cozzie" instead, which is a classic example of Australia's strong state-by-state slang variation for the exact same item.
