Where "Tim Tam" Comes From
Tim Tams were launched by Arnott's in 1964, reportedly named after a winning horse at the 1958 Kentucky Derby, Tim Tam, by an executive who liked the sound of the name.
They quickly became Australia's best-selling chocolate biscuit and have stayed there ever since, spawning a wide range of flavour variations over the decades.
How Aussies Actually Use It
Tim Tams are a genuine national icon — found in almost every Australian pantry, and a classic gift to send overseas as "authentic Aussie food."
The "Tim Tam Slam" is the famous ritual: biting off two opposite corners, then using the biscuit as a straw to suck hot tea or coffee through it before it collapses.
