Where "Bottle-o" Comes From
A classic example of the Australian habit of taking a compound noun ("bottle shop") and clipping it down with the informal "-o" suffix, the same pattern behind "servo" and "smoko."
Bottle shops themselves date back to when hotels first got separate licences to sell packaged alcohol for off-premises drinking, distinct from the pub itself.
How Aussies Actually Use It
The default, almost universal term for a liquor store — "heading to the bottle-o, want anything?" is a phrase heard on driveways and porches across the country before a barbecue or party.
It's rarely called anything else in casual speech; "liquor store" sounds distinctly un-Australian by comparison.
